Working web designs - Our philosophy
This 'constitution' for web site design is based on best practice. We try to stick to this philosophy wherever possible.
- The user (your audience) is sovereign. The site should always be designed around user needs, not just business structure or operational convenience.
- Function takes precedence over appearance. Whilst design is important, aesthetics are always subjective. We build sites that are easy to use - and look good.
- In both design and content, simplicity beats complexity; simplicity increases the range of devices that can be used to access the site (including mobile phones and PDAs). Therefore, any proposed 'bells and whistles' must have a demonstrable value to visitors.
- Sites should be built for all browsers, on all platforms, wherever possible, using modern coding techniques.
- Your web site must be credible and trustworthy. This means it must have:
- Clear contact information.
- Information that is citable and 'bookmarkable'.
- All content on your web site must be:
- Accessible to people with disabilities. Where this clashes with aesthetics or organisational convenience, it trumps them.
- Written for the Web (written for scanning and reading on screen not the printed page).
- Written for your intended audience.
- Clearly written, grammatically sound, spell-checked and proof-read.
- Current, with dates; old or out-dated material must be deleted, or archived in a manner that clearly identifies its status.
- Easily findable (through navigation, site search, and web search)
- Printable - in a form that removes unneeded elements if required.
